January 10-11: Hiroshima
Here are some pictures of Hiroshima. Text will come when I find the time....
X here that was the hypercenter of the world's first atomic bomb deployment. 160 metersabove the dome below the Enola Gay dropped Oppenheimer's "Little Boy", killing 75,000 instantly, and another 125,000 Hiroshima residents by resulting injuries and disease durig the following 5 years. Nagasaki followed, and 5 days later the war in the Pacific was over. After being asked to take a picture by two tourists, I asked them to take my picture (although they had trouble figuring out the camera). We walked the length of the Peace Park together, and started a broken English to broken Japanese conversation which led us to....

A marker or small shrine of some sorts greets the visitor.

Beneath the dome, rubble from the blast remains.

I couldn't have smiled even if I wanted to for this picture. The late afternoon sun still allowed for a good exposure of the "genko-domai", A-bomb dome.

To a little dive near the train station to dine on the famous Hiroshimayaki, a modified okonomiyaki where the usual bulk of cabbage is replaced by a bulk of noodles.

I guess this particular camera was new to everybody, not just to Americans. It was certainly an attention getter.
